Tono
Forns

Tono Forns moved to Ibiza in 2022, and that is where he started playing padel. He came from tennis, and the switch to the glass court was a gradual adaptation.

A Zurdo with an attacking game, he always plays on the right side, where he likes to work the back wall and drive crosscourt. He is part of a padel community that keeps growing on the island, and has his own jewellery shop in Santa Eulalia – Forns Joyería.

Are you proud to be left-handed?

Proud as such, no. Although I do like being left-handed, for me it’s not a handicap. There are some things where a left-hander can have advantages, like in sports, and other things where you have to adapt to a right-handed world.

How did you get into padel, and what is it like playing in Ibiza?

I started playing padel when I came to live in Ibiza in 2022. I came from tennis and it was a gradual adaptation. As for padel in Ibiza, we’re talking about a sport that many people play on the island and it’s always evolving.

What is your favourite shot as a lefty, and why do right-handers struggle with it?

As a left-hander, I really enjoy playing off the back wall in all its variations. Having the center covered is an advantage that a left-hander can use to shift their drive into a crosscourt shot.

“As a left-hander, I always play on the right, and because of my more offensive style, it means I’m generally attacking more than defending during the match.”

Tono Forns

Do you play on the left or the right side? What does that side give you?

As a left-hander, I always play on the right, and because of my more offensive style, it means I’m generally attacking more than defending during the match.

What’s the first thing you notice when an opponent isn’t used to playing a lefty?

It’s most noticeable in how they read spin and the way the ball bounces off the glass.

Do left-handed players have a real advantage, or is it overrated?

I think they have a certain advantage; it’s not huge, but it’s a positive point nonetheless.

What is the padel community like in Ibiza? Are there many Zurdos on the island?

The padel community in Ibiza is large relative to the population, and it’s one of the most popular sports on the island. There are quite a few left-handed players in Ibiza, and many of us have seen each other on the courts.

What do you like most about Tribe Zurdo?

What I like most about Tribe Zurdo is Andy, a great guy. I have a lot of respect for him.

What advice would you give a Zurdo who has just started playing padel?

My advice would be to focus on taking lessons with a good teacher who can improve your game and develop your skills. Also important is not to skimp on equipment; good equipment always helps.

02 — Tactical Tip of the Month

Advantage Zurdo · Chapter 5.6

Overhead
strategy

Your overheads (bandeja, víbora, smash) are unique because:

Your spin is reversed

Your angles are unfamiliar

Your smash naturally goes cross court

Your bandeja naturally goes middle

Court diagram: left hander overhead targets Z1 to Z4

Your overhead goals

Push Opponent 1 back

Force weak lobs

Create chaos with spin

Set up your partner

Overhead targets

Middle seam

Opponent 1’s backhand

Deep cross court

Deep into Opponent 2’s backhand

Your overheads don’t need to be powerful – they need to be smart. Your overheads should always create pressure, not risk.
